MemoriaCloud is a photo storage and client-sharing platform for photographers, built as a Spring Boot service layer behind a React web app. Originals are written to AWS S3 and moved between hot, warm and cold tiers by access pattern, while MySQL holds albums, clients and permissions. A modular monolith was the right shape for a small team: one deployable with clear modules for upload, preservation, sharing and billing.

A React and Ant Design web app serves photographers for uploading and organizing, and a lighter client-facing gallery view for their customers.
A CDN fronts both the app and image delivery; uploads bypass the API via signed URLs straight to object storage.
Java Spring Boot modules handle metadata, derivative generation, preservation checks and the permission model.
Originals and derivatives live in S3 across lifecycle tiers; relational metadata lives in MySQL.
Subscription billing, transactional email for share invitations and analytics on gallery views.
Auto-scaled application nodes on AWS with S3 lifecycle rules, cross-region replication and CDN caching.
A photographer selects a shoot; the app requests signed upload URLs and streams originals directly to the S3 hot tier.
The ingest service records metadata in MySQL, computes a checksum and queues derivative generation.
The derivative pipeline renders web and thumbnail sizes and stores them beside the original for fast CDN delivery.
The photographer groups photos into an album and grants a client access; the permission service issues a scoped share link.
The client opens the link, is authenticated, and the gallery loads derivatives via the CDN while originals stay private.
Lifecycle rules move rarely accessed originals to warm and cold tiers; integrity jobs verify checksums and migrate formats over time.
Large high-resolution files never pass through the application servers, which keeps the Spring Boot fleet small and lets uploads scale with S3 rather than compute.
Unlimited storage is only viable if cost falls with age; moving originals to cheaper tiers by access pattern while serving derivatives from the hot tier preserves quality and controls spend.
Galleries are view-heavy, so pre-rendered sizes served from edge caches gave the 5x faster load time, while originals stay behind authenticated, time-limited access.
With a 10+ person team and tightly coupled upload, album and permission logic, one Spring Boot deployable was simpler to operate and still met the 99.99% uptime result.
